There was no love lost between Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta when they came together on Valentines Day, February 14th 1951 in what remains one of the most memorable bouts in boxing history What made THIS installment different than their previous battles was that Robinson was able to pull away in the final stretch and stopped the "Raging Bull" at 2:14 of 2:14 the 13th round It was labeled "The St Valentines Day Massacre” of boxing because of the merciless beating Sugar Ray put on LaMotta in the closing rounds Although the Raging Bull “never went down,” the bout provided a dramatic end to their ongoing rivalry
